Edward Ng

Edward Ng is also the team leader of Urban Sustainability and Public Health in the Institute of Energy, Environment, and Sustainability (IEES) at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. He originally obtained his doctoral degree from the University of Cambridge and worked as an architect before becoming a professor. Ng specialises in green building, environmental and sustainable design, and urban climatology for city planning. As an environmental consultant to the Government of the Hong Kong SAR, he developed the performance-based daylight design practice note, the Air Ventilation Assessment Technical Guidelines, and the Urban Climatic Maps for City Planning. He has been working with the governments and agencies in Singapore and Macau, as well as a number of Chinese cities, on urban climatic maps.

Ng has published over 500 papers and was among the world’s top 2% most cited scientists in his field, as ranked by Stanford University in 2023. Among many of his research interests, he is now utilising ground-based LiDAR remote sensing techniques to investigate the influence of city design and regional climate on the urban wind environment. He has twice received the International Award from the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA). He has also twice been honoured by the UNESCO Asia Pacific Heritage Jury Commendation for Innovation Award. He recently received a prestigious Doctor of Science (DSc) degree from Cambridge University.
