Western Sydney University
Ransi Subasinghe Arachchige, a graduate in Biomedical Engineering from the University of Wollongong (2020), is currently pursuing a PhD in Biomechanics at Western Sydney University under the supervision of Professor Roy Cheung. Her research centres on the hip osteoarthritis population and the potential of gait analysis as a non-intrusive management and diagnostic tool. She investigates the previously unexplored variations in walking patterns observed across the different severities of hip osteoarthritis. By implementing machine learning and musculoskeletal modelling, Ransi and her team aim to develop a wearable device, streamlining gait analysis without the need for expensive and time-consuming lab-based technology. While existing literature in this space predominantly focuses on functional activities like walking, Ransi aims to address this gap by investigating the impact of gait retraining strategies during both walking and running, advocating the benefits of engaging in long-term exercise among the hip osteoarthritis population for improved quality of life.
