Jia Chen
Professor and Director of Gene Editing Center, School of Life Science and Technology, ShanghaiTech University

Jia Chen is a distinguished researcher in DNA Repair, Gene Editing, and Gene Therapy. His work investigates how genome stability, upheld by DNA repair pathways, shapes aging, evolution, and disease. With a keen focus on genome editing, his lab develops cutting-edge tools for precise genetic manipulation, impacting life sciences, biotechnology, and clinical innovation.

The team has uncovered mechanisms of DNA repair-induced mutagenesis and pioneered multiple base editing systems. Their landmark achievement includes the world’s first clinical application of base editing to treat β-thalassemia, successfully aiding patients across several countries. The drug candidate CS-101 earned IND approval from China's NMPA in 2024 and was highlighted at the European Hematology Association Congress (EHA2024) as a breakthrough in managing β-hemoglobinopathies.
