Ajit Balram is a member of Theoretical Physics Department at Institute of Mathematical Sciences (IMSc), Chennai. After completing his schooling in New Delhi, he joined the Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER), Pune, in 2006 for his undergraduate studies. He graduated with a combined bachelor's and master's degree in science, specialising in physics. He then pursued a PhD in physics at Pennsylvania State University, working with Professor JK Jain, and completed his degree in 2016. Following a three-year postdoctoral position at the Niels Bohr Institute and Center for Quantum Devices in Copenhagen, he returned to India to join IMSc as faculty member.
