Building and replenishing the immune system
An extraordinary amount is known about blood cell formation, but many important questions remain about cells providing adaptive and innate immunity. The initial origin, migration and potential reemergence of hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) is still controversial and there is much to learn about HSC diversity. Many differentiation diagrams depict this process, but none fully capture its dynamic nature. That is especially the case for changes that occur with age and during infection. Highly effective experimental approaches are now available, but we will discuss some of their limitations. Our goal will be to identify exciting topics for new research projects. (60 minute lecture + 30 minute discussion)
