Wai Kit Tam is a molecular and cell biologist with a research interest on hypoxic regulation and circadian clock of chondrocyte homeostasis; intervertebral disc/chondrogenic progenitors and mesenchymal stem cell biology; regenerative medicine in musculoskeletal disease; molecular genetics and etiology of Adolescent Idiopathic Scoliosis. He joined a research exchange programme under the supervision of Prof. Qing-Jun Meng, University of Manchester in investigation of hypoxia responsive factors (HIF-αs) in regulation of the circadian clock of chondrocytes. He also researched on MAP kinase activities in deriving intervertebral disc progenitors from mesenchymal stem cells and is currently developing of an inducible immortalized system for creation of a human foetal notochordal cell for delineating the differentiation of notochordal cells to mature intervertebral disc cells in collaboration with Prof. Kathryn Cheah (School of Biomedical Science, the University of Hong Kong) and Dr. Antoine A.F. de Vries (Leiden University Medical Center).
