Hong Kong Observatory
Ping Cheung joined the Hong Kong Observatory (HKO) in 2001 and he currently oversees the airport meteorological equipment, automatic observing systems, and the automatic low-level wind shear and turbulence warning systems at the Hong Kong International Airport. HKO utilises LIDAR technology to detect wind shear in aircraft arrival and departure corridors. The LIDAR is configured to perform glide path scans, enabling the extraction of headwind profiles along flight paths to identify wind shear ramps that can significantly impact lift, affecting landing and take-off safety. Additionally, HKO deploys short-range LIDARs to monitor and issue alerts for turbulence caused by building wakes.
