Jimmy Fung
Chair Professor, Division of Environment and Sustainability, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology
Jimmy Fung specialises in atmospheric sciences, air quality modelling, regional climate modelling, and remote sensing technology. He has extensively researched air pollution in Hong Kong and the Pearl River Delta Region. His current research focuses on understanding, predicting, and assessing meteorological and air pollution problems and climate risk in urban and coastal environments. Fung’s mesoscale modelling system has been widely utilised in educational and research programmes, including studies on regional climate change, wind fields associated with large-scale monsoon circulation, pre-summer severe rainstorms, typhoons, and the regional thermally forced land-sea breeze circulation. Additionally, his research examines the impact of regional urban built forms and extreme heat. His expertise in applying advanced atmospheric and chemistry models, such as CMAQ (Community Multiscale Air Quality), has enabled him to study air quality over the Hong Kong and Pearl River Delta regions down to street-level scales.
