Global water security: integrated modeling and adaptive management

This meeting updates local engineers and scientists on recent developments in integrative approaches to understanding global water security.
Globally climate change, population growth and urbanization all pose challenges to water security. Over the past three decades, we have witnessed the impacts of climate change in Hong Kong - increased rainfall intensity and extreme floods. Increasing urbanization also led to the need to deal with river flood risks in upland catchments. Despite the attention paid to issues such as sea level rise and river restoration, there has been a lack of integrated understanding of climate- change induced impacts on flood control and ecosystem services. Consequently, it is not surprising that we still do not have a coherent, science-based approach to address climate change impacts in urban drainage design (or for that matter in our climate policy). There is an urgent need to develop local research in linking climate and hydrological/hydraulic modeling, with a view to improving drainage design guidelines (e.g. reliable rainfall intensity-duration-frequency curves). The coupling of real time meteorological, hydrodynamic and water quality forecasts will also open up new research areas relevant to smart cities. This meeting updates local engineers and scientists on recent developments in integrative approaches to understanding global water security. Three inter-related areas are covered and integrated: (i) climate change induced impacts on rainfall and floods; (ii) smart water management to enhance efficiency and conservation; and (iii) systems modelling of water-energy-food nexus for linkage with water resources management and policy.
