Nidia S. Trovao
Head, Section of Genomic Epidemiology and Evolution of Pathogens, National Institutes of Health
Nidia S. Trovao holds a PhD degree in Biomedical Sciences from KU Leuven, Belgium, and was a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Microbiology, Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, New York, USA. She is a molecular epidemiologist currently heading the Section of Genomic Epidemiology and Evolution of Pathogens (GEEP; https://www.fic.nih.gov/About/Staff/epidemiology-population-studies/Pages/Genomic-Epidemiology-and-Evolution-of-Pathogens-.aspx) at the Fogarty International Center, National Institutes of Health, USA. Her team’s research focuses on the genomic epidemiology of viral infectious diseases through the application of Bayesian phylodynamic models and other computational biology methods to disentangle the evolutionary history and spatio-temporal dynamics of viral pathogens, such as HIV, influenza A virus, and SARS-CoV-2. Dr. Trovao leads a robust capacity-building program on genomic epidemiology, bioinformatics, phylogenetics, and phylodynamics towards better public health responses, and has trained more than 600 researchers from institutions across the world in partnership with the US CDC, Africa CDC, World Health Organization, Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Chan Zuckerberg Biohub, among others. She is a member of the Editorial Board of the Virus Evolution journal.
