Postdoctoral Researcher, University of Edinburgh
Áine Niamh O'Toole, a post-doctoral researcher at the University of Edinburgh, focuses on studying the evolutionary processes of emerging viruses and developing bioinformatic software for genomic epidemiology. She carried out a Masters in Molecular Evolution at the Smurfit Institute of Genetics, Trinity College Dublin and another in Host, Pathogens and Global Health at the University of Edinburgh. Having joined the Rambaut Lab at Edinburgh University to complete her PhD, Áine has contributed to the field by creating software tools like pangolin, working in the phylogenetics core of the COVID-19 Genomics UK Consortium and has been a member of the ARTIC Network since its inception. She served as the chair of the Pango lineage designation committee throughout the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic and since then, has continued in the University of Edinburgh as part of the Rambaut group, working on the evolution of emerging viruses, including MPXV and poliovirus.
