Yongwoo Son is a veterinarian (DVM) and graduate researcher at Konkuk University, working in viral molecular epidemiology from a One Health perspective. His early research focused on avian paramyxoviruses in South Korea, a key stopover site along the East Asian–Australasian Flyway, where he used BEAST-based phylogeographic methods to investigate how migratory birds contribute to viral dispersal. More recently, he has been delivering on-site training in viral sequencing and analysis in Tanzania and Lao PDR, covering dengue virus evolution in Tanzania and genomic surveillance of dengue, measles, and chikungunya viruses in Lao PDR. Across these projects, he has become increasingly interested in how viral genomic data is interpreted and applied for public health, particularly in settings where surveillance capacity is still limited.
