Joseph Wu is a professor in the School of Public Health at the University of Hong Kong. He specialises in mathematical and statistical modelling of infectious and chronic diseases, with a focus on developing practical analytics and strategies for disease control and prevention. His research spans a broad spectrum of health challenges, including COVID‑19, seasonal and pandemic influenza, hand‑foot‑and‑mouth disease, HPV, MERS, yellow fever, and cancers such as cervical, colorectal, and breast cancer. His current programme emphasises advancing AI technologies and tools for global and personal health protection, particularly in clinical natural language processing, epidemic nowcasting and forecasting, and vaccine hesitancy.
In addition to his research, Wu is actively engaged in education and international collaboration. He directs HKU’s first Massive Open Online Courseware (MOOC) Epidemics, which has reached tens of thousands of learners worldwide, and contributes to the academic community as co-editor‑in‑chief of Epidemics and associate editor of PLOS Computational Biology and PLOS Neglected Tropical Diseases.
