Chak Sing Lau
Dean of Medicine, HKUMed, University of Hong Kong

Chak Sing Lau is a pioneer who transformed rheumatology and clinical immunology in Hong Kong, building the field from just three clinical academics in 1992 into a thriving research and clinical discipline with international impact.

As Vice-President & Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Health) (Interim) and Dean of Medicine at the University of Hong Kong, he continues to shape healthcare education and translational research strategy across the region. He founded the Hong Kong Arthritis & Rheumatism Foundation (2001) and co-established the multi-national Asia Pacific Lupus Collaboration (2011), driving collaborative research that bridges immunological mechanisms with patient care. Under his leadership as APLAR President (2006–2008), he spearheaded Asia-Pacific's first evidence-based treatment guidelines for rheumatoid arthritis and axial spondyloarthritis—exemplifying bench-to-bedside translation. His work has earned global recognition as an Honorary Member of EULAR (2022), Member of Academia Europaea (2023), and Doctor of Science honoris causa from the University of Glasgow (2024).

Beyond academia, he advises Hong Kong's Health Bureau and Hospital Authority on policy, and represents the health sector as a Member of China's National CPPCC. His career embodies translational excellence—cultivating research talent, forging international networks, and converting immune insights into improved outcomes for patients with autoimmune and inflammatory diseases across Asia and beyond.
