Benedict Lo
Associate Professor, Department of Applied Biology and Chemical Technology, Hong Kong Polytechnic University

Benedict Lo is an associate professor in the Department of Applied Biology and Chemical Technology at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University. As a Presidential Young Scholar (PolyU), he leads a research group focused on the rational design of functional materials for clean energy and sustainable catalysis.

Lo earned his MChem and DPhil in Chemistry from the University of Oxford, where he specialised in advanced characterisation techniques. His research integrates synchrotron X-ray technologies, such as operando powder diffraction and pair distribution function analysis, to map structure-reactivity relationships at the atomic level. His work primarily addresses global challenges in CO2 reduction, electrochemical synthesis, and the development of high-performance zeolites and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs).

Recognised for his contributions to materials chemistry, he has received the PolyU Young Innovative Researcher Award (2022) and the National Science Foundation of China’s Young Scientists Fund (2025). He is a member of the Royal Society of Chemistry and serves as a principal investigator within the PolyU Academy for Interdisciplinary Research, bridging the gap between fundamental chemistry and industrial energy applications.
