Pascal Vontobel
Professor, Chairman, and Graduate Division Head, Department of Information Engineering, Chinese University of Hong Kong

Pascal Vontobel is a Professor, Department Chair, and Graduate Division Head in the Department of Information Engineering at the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), where he has been a faculty member since 2014. Previously, he was a research scientist at Hewlett-Packard Laboratories in Palo Alto (2006–2013) and held academic positions at ETH Zurich, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, the University of Wisconsin-Madison, MIT, and Stanford University.


Vontobel's research focuses on information and coding theory, quantum information, data science, communications, and signal processing. He has served as an Associate Editor for the IEEE Transactions on Information Theory and the IEEE Transactions on Communications, and as a Distinguished Lecturer of the IEEE Information Theory Society. He has chaired and co-organised numerous international conferences, workshops, and summer courses, and currently serves on the Thomas Cover Dissertation Awards Committee of the IEEE Information Theory Society.

An IEEE Fellow, Vontobel has delivered plenary talks at major conferences and received several honours, including the ETH Medal for his PhD dissertation and an exemplary reviewer award from the IEEE Communications Society.
