Dr Marcus Mah
Research Fellow, Duke-NUS Medical School, Duke-NUS Medical School

Marcus Mah earned his PhD from the National University of Singapore in the Laboratory of Virus Evolution led by Prof. Gavin Smith at Duke-NUS Medical School. The research interest started with the identification of etiological agents of febrile illness from patients in Singapore and Tanzania. From the array of respiratory viruses identified, interest into coronaviruses started in 2017 before culminating into a thesis entitled the molecular epidemiology and evolution of human seasonal coronaviruses. Specifically, next-generation sequencing enabled a comprehensive phylogenetic reconstruction of the common cold coronaviruses across time and space. As well as attempting to passage some coronaviruses in bat cells. In his current post-doctoral training, he is exploring different domains of coronavirology, ranging from surveillance of coronaviruses sampled from hot-spot countries like Cambodia (porcine deltacoroanvirus), alternate modes of coronavirus replication in bat cells, and seasonal coronavirus infection of human nasal organoids (HKU1).
