Ori Avinoam
Principal Investigator, Department of Biomolecular Sciences, Weizmann Institute of Science

Dr Ori Avinoam is a principal investigator in the Department of Biomolecular Sciences at the Weizmann Institute of Science. He received his PhD in Biology at the Technion – Israel Institute of Technology and completed postdoctoral training at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL). Since establishing his independent research group in 2017, Avinoam has led multidisciplinary investigations into membrane trafficking and remodelling. His research group are interested in the universal process of membrane remodelling that occurs during endocytosis, when subdomains of the membrane are reshaped into cargo transport vesicles, which allow cells to take up material and communicate with the environment. Their studies focus on understanding the molecular mechanisms of endocytosis and their contribution to cell physiology. They use a combination of advanced imaging techniques that include correlated light and electron microscopy to visualise these processes with high spatial and temporal resolution. They are particularly interested in understanding how endocytic processes contribute to muscle differentiation and homeostasis.
