Liwen Jiang is Choh-ming Li Professor of Life Sciences and Associate Dean (Research) of the Faculty of Science of the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Since November 2025, he has also served as Pro-Vice-Chancellor (External Affairs), leading global engagement. Joining the University in 2000, he became a full professor in 2007 and has played key roles in advancing academic development and international collaboration.
Jiang earned his PhD from Simon Fraser University in 1996 and completed postdoctoral research at Washington State University. His research focuses on plant cell biology, particularly protein trafficking, membrane dynamics, and organelle biogenesis.
He has established two major Area of Excellence (AoE) Centres: Organelle Biogenesis and Function (HK$47.5 million, 2014–2021) and Plant Vacuole Biology and Biotechnology (HK$87.7 million, 2026–2030). With the support of RGC and CUHK matching fund, Jiang also developed advanced research platforms worth over HK$100M, including Hong Kong’s first 3D TEM (2016), cryo-EM/ET (2019), Cryo-FIB/CLEM (2021/23), and advanced integrated live-cell imaging systems (2024). With support from the new AoE (2026–2030) and the newly awarded CRF-E (2026-2029), Jiang and his team will establish Hong Kong’s first array-tomo large-volume ET system in 2026, along with a new MINFLUX system offering nanometer-resolution live-cell imaging in 2026. These facilities have fostered global collaborations and produced publications in leading journals such as Science, Nature, Cell, Nature Plants, Nature Communications, and Plant Cell.
