26 June 2023

Young Hong Kong scientists, supported by the Croucher Foundation, will join the 72nd Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting to connect with Nobel Laureates and researchers, share their work, and build global networks in physiology/medicine.

The 72nd Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting, taking place from 25-30 June, will host a 40 Nobel Laureates, a record number, as well as a full capacity of young scientists from across the globe. Among these promising young minds are a group of Hong Kong scientists, supported by the Croucher Foundation, who will have the opportunity to interact with Nobel Laureates and fellow researchers in the fields of physiology and medicine at Lake Constance in Germany.

In total, 635 young scientists from 98 countries will participate in the meeting, creating a unique platform for the exchange of ideas and fostering a global network. The Lindau Meetings are known for their special atmosphere, which arises from personal encounters between scientists from different countries, cultures, and generations.

This year's Lindau Meeting will focus on key topics related to medicine, such as diversity, artificial intelligence, and climate change. In addition to lectures and Agora Talks by Nobel Laureates, the program will include panel discussions with laureates, young scientists, and other experts. The Scientific Chairs of the Lindau Meetings, Professors Stefan H.E. Kaufmann and Klas Kärre, have organised the event to address current issues in the scientific community.

At the opening of the meeting on 25 June, Countess Bettina Bernadotte af Wisborg, President of the Council said,“In addition to the question of how the meetings will deal with climate change and artificial intelligence in the future, diversity continues to be important this time: We are firmly convinced that greater diversity helps us to achieve our leitmotif and goal ‘Educate. Inspire. Connect.’ more effectively. Furthermore, looking around us, we see a world in conflict. Let us make this Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting a statement of hope, and of our belief in a better future. And we base this belief on the power of exchange between cultures and generations, and what this exchange can yield.”

For the Hong Kong scientists supported by the Croucher Foundation, the opportunity to attend the Lindau Meeting will provide invaluable experience, exposure to cutting-edge research, and the chance to establish connections with peers and Nobel Laureates alike. Participation in the meeting is a once-in-a-lifetime event, but the young scientists will continue to be part of the Lindau Alumni Network, serving as ambassadors for scientific dialogue.

The Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings have been held annually since 1951, offering a unique forum for the exchange of ideas between different generations, cultures, and disciplines in the scientific community. The Hong Kong young scientists' participation, supported by the Croucher Foundation, underscores the importance of fostering international collaboration and nurturing the next generation of scientific leaders. The Croucher Foundation has been an academic partner of the Lindau Nobel Laureate meeting since 2012.
