How to start a company

10 March 2018

On 7 March 2018 at the Kowloon Cricket Club the Croucher Scholars Association held the first in a series of talks designed to encourage participants to share ideas, engage in discussion, and develop a deeper understanding of the world.

CSA Talk: How to start a company included three short presentations by invited experts followed by discussion.

Nisa Leung of Qiming Venture Partners, Denis Tse of Asia-IO Advisors and Dennis Lo of the Chinese University of Hong Kong were the invited speakers. Topics covered included preparing a strategic plan, working with investors, customer relations, common pitfalls, and following an idea from basic research through to the launch of a commercially-viable product.

In 2016, the Croucher Foundation approved a new funding initiative to back ideas of Croucher award recipients wishing to use their scientific and technological expertise to establish businesses in Hong Kong.

Nisa Leung and Denis Tse are members of the selection committee for the Croucher Startup 2.0 scheme. Dennis Lo is a chemical pathologist who completely changed thinking on prenatal diagnosis by discovering that it was possible to pick up an unborn baby’s DNA and RNA in cell-free form from maternal blood. This development created a paradigm shift in prenatal medicine.
