Super-resolving subcellular organelles
Jeff Yui Long Lam
This image displays the result of advanced imaging techniques applied to human cells to greatly enhance the resolution that can be achieved using conventional techniques. The phrase "subcellular organelles" refers to the various structures within cells (such as mitochondria) that carry out specific functions necessary for the cell's life and operation. To create this image, multiple images were combined to create a final image using a technique known as exchange-PAINT.

The result of this technique is not only visually stunning. Crucially, this method enables researchers to see these essential components in unprecedented detail, contributing to our understanding of their composition, dynamics, and roles within the cellular environment and potentially aiding in disease research.

Dr Lam is a research associate at the Yusuf Hamied Department of Chemistry, University of Cambridge.
