Congratulations to Professor Francis K.L. Chan (Croucher Senior Medical Research Fellowship 2007, Croucher Fellowship 1993), of Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), for receiving the International Leadership Award 2018 from the American College of Gastroenterology. Chan is the first Chinese scholar to be selected for this award, which recognises his outstanding contributions to the international gastroenterology community.

Chan specialises in gastrointestinal bleeding, helicobacter pylori, and cancer prevention, and has published more than 500 full scientific articles in high-impact international journals. He is among the first in academic history to publish eight first-authored original research articles in two prestigious medical journals, namely The Lancet and New England Journal of Medicine. His research findings have been incorporated into clinical practice guidelines in the US, Europe and the Asia Pacific region. He is also the first scholar in China to be profiled in The Lancet.

“I am deeply honoured to be selected for this prestigious award. This recognition from the College encourages me and my team to do research that will add value to the international community,” Chan said.

His contributions to medical research have been recognised worldwide with many previous national and international awards. He received a Croucher Senior Medical Research Fellowship in 2007, Andy Martynoga Memorial Lectureship (England) in 2008, JGHF Marshall and Warren Lectureship (Asian Pacific Association of Gastroenterology) in 2011, and Outstanding Scientific Research Output Award (Ministry of Education, People’s Republic of China) in 2011. In recognition of his outstanding academic achievement, he was awarded a Doctor of Science degree from CUHK in 2011.
